How to Protect Your AirPods and Maintain Their Performance

While many people know how to clean their AirPods, few know how to protect your AirPods from dirt and grime. The earpieces are made of a tough and durable material that is not easily damaged. The earpieces use a soft and pliable silicone earpad to record the events of an athletic game or to listen to music. Unlike traditional headphones, they do not have wires that need to be snaked through your hair to insert into your ears. Because of this, they can be kept out of sight and away from harm.

Because of their construction, you do not want to use any product that could damage your AirPods or even puncture the earphones. That’s why it’s smart to make sure you always have a quality pair of cotton swabs or a small cotton ball in your gym bag or pocket. When you’re in a public place with lots of people, use your own cotton swab to clean any sweat or dirt off of your AirPods or headphones. If you use a product like Liquid Organic Cleaner that’s specifically designed to clean electronic equipment, wipe any sweat or dirt off your AirPods as soon as possible. If you let sweat build up for too long, it can damage the fragile materials that make up the headphones.

In order to ensure the longevity of your AirPods and to keep them working smoothly, it’s smart to clean and oil them at least twice a week. When you do so, make sure you follow all the proper steps in the cleaning process. First, ensure you have completely drained your battery before you begin; keep the volume at about half-volume to avoid overheating the earwax and causing damage.

After ensuring your batteries are drained, remove the AirPods and gently wipe the earwax from each side of the headphones. Use a clean cotton swab and dip it into the solution provided by AirPods manufacturer, but only enough to allow a small amount to seep through. Next, wipe the earwax from the outside of the ear into the inner padding. Be very careful when doing this, and don’t scrape the earwax against the AirPods or cotton swab. This can permanently damage the ear canal.

Protect your AirPods by wearing protective covers on the microphones as well as on the earphones themselves. If your AirPods come with memory foam cushions, you should wipe down each one with the microfiber cloth once or twice a day. If you don’t have cushions, you’ll need to purchase an inexpensive pair of earmuffs to place inside your headphones. Microfiber cloths will leave residue on cushions that can attract dirt and dust. Earmuffs will also protect against overly-heated music. Additionally, they’ll keep your ears dry.

Clean your AirPods according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Place all of the cushions in a zip lock bag and store them in the freezer. This will help to make them completely dry and completely clean. If your headphones get really dirty, this can prevent them from working correctly. Before placing your iPod back into the case, remove all of the debris from inside of it, including the memory foam cushions if applicable.

Bose also offers a solution for how to protect your AirPods and keep them functioning properly. They offer a line of sweat-proof headphones called Bose QuietComfort 3. These headphones are especially useful if you frequently exercise. For instance, if you work out after your workout, you may sweat during your workout. A typical set of sweat proof headphones will work best in situations like this. If your workout includes a lot of walking, however, your best bet is probably Bose’s QuietComfort 3.

Although many people use their laptops or notebook PCs as headphones, there are also many people who use them as portable media players. Bose even makes a product just for this type of use. The Bose Playbook is an extremely compact device that includes its own battery. This enables you to listen to your music player with your AirPods wherever you may be.
